For automation purposes, we received requests asking us to make it possible for the system to send a message over
TCP/IP to a specific IP address and port number after a label has been printed. We have added new network
enabled functionality so the print system can even be more tightly integrated into existing and newly developed
packaging and automation applications. The message that the controller will send after each print is
"PRINT_COMPLETE" (ASCII, capital letters).
The main purpose of this feature, but not restricted to, is to use this in combination with the Nicelabel
automation feature. NiceLabel Automation is an application that automates repetitive tasks. In most cases
one would use it to integrate label printing processes into existing informational systems, such as existing
business applications, production and packaging lines, distribution systems, supply chains.
To setup the controller to send a PRINT_COMPLETE after a label has been printed is, again, very simple.
Press Settings – Network:
Enter the automation IP address of the system that needs to receive the PRINT_COMPLETE message,
Set the automation port number of the system to which the message will be send,
Enable "automation" by pressing the "disabled" button behind "Automation".
Activating this command requires a reboot of the system. Switch off and back on after 10 seconds.
A few things to be aware about:
Once the automation feature has been activated, a TCP/IP server will be started in order to be able to send
the message to the set IP etc. The controller will create a connection to the other IP address when the first
message is about to be send. If there is no active IP address / port is found, the system will create an error
message and the TCP/IP server is shut down. To restart the process, make sure the set IP address exists and
is active. Toggle the automation option to try again.
The PRINT_COMPLETE string, send after each print when this function is activated, can be used by Nicelabel
automation as an event on which defined actions can be executed. One of the most used actions is to get new data
from a database, create a new label and send it to the printer. Effectively, the data to be printed on the products is
synchronized with the printing process this way. One needs to be aware that after PRINT_COMPLETE has been
received by the automation application, time is required to rebuild the e.g. new label, send it to the printer and for
the printer to generate a bitmap for printing it on the product.
